As I’ve been learning to navigate the world of Social Media Marketing, its become evident that if you have a a profile on a social network, you’re ‘doing social media marketing’ whether you think you are or not. If you have a profile set up, people can and will find you through network recommendations, searches within the network, and even through Google.
There’s obviously a difference in the use of social media between personal and public and if your personal Facebook profile isn’t optimized, it’s probably not a big deal (as long as it’s private). However, if you’re in any kind of customer customer facing position, you owe it to yourself to at least make sure you’ve got the basics covered.
I recently participated in a poll on LinkedIn – Do you look up people on LinkedIn before a meeting ? 65% of the respondents said always and 32% said occasionally, which means it’s more than likely that someone is going to view your LinkedIn profile. I’ve been surprised at how many LinkedIn profiles are missing profile pictures. Chances are they may also look you up on Twitter, Facebook, or Google+.
I don’t know about you, but I’m not likely to connect with, recommend, listen to, or do business with someone that looks like an egghead or a cartoon profile.
I hope this doesn’t describe you. If it does and if you do nothing else to optimize your social media presence at least upload a picture of yourself so people can see what you look like.
It’s best if you have a professional head-shot taken, especially for LinkedIn; but if you don’t have one just pick out a nice picture of yourself and post it. It may go without saying, but then again I’ve seen some interesting profile pictures, make the photo professional or keep the account private.
People do business with people and the beauty (and maybe the curse) of social media is that it’s made it all the easier to learn about who we want to interact without ever having to meet them in person.
First impressions have always mattered and they still do. The information you provide varies somewhat from one social network to another and although you may feel it’s not important, the more complete your profile is the better. This is especially important if you’re marketing yourself or your business. Whether you own your own company or you work for one, your social presence is a reflection of you both personally and professionally.

I’m not sure if a profile can ever be completely optimized, its something that requires regular review and updates and is more of a constant work in progress. Stay tuned into the new features that each of the platforms roll out to understand how you can use them to your advantage.
Put yourself in the shoes of a prospective client and provide them with lots of great information and let them get to know you. The more you share, the more your business will grow.
