Lead Generation – The Power of Content

This post should be categorized under “lessons learned.” I’ve been MIA for over a month. No blogging and very limited social networking. I don’t really have a good reason for dropping off of the face of the earth other than the fact that sometimes life happens and it’s necessary to take some time off to attend to personal and professional obligations.

In spite of my absence, something amazing has been happening during the past month. I haven’t been actively creating and publishing new content but the organic traffic to my site has not only remained steady, much to my surprise and delight, it’s actually on a slow but steady increase. The even better news is that it’s not “just traffic.” In the past three weeks I’ve received multiple inquiries about my SEO training and consulting services via my contact form.

The really cool thing is that there’s been engagement with multiple types of content. One of the folks that reached out to me found a couple of posts I wrote last April as part of an online SEO workshop series. The Google HOA (Hangout On Air) workshops were hosted by Sherry Nouraini in the #opensm community.

The blog posts with the embedded videos were written and published over six months ago! This is a real life example of how important it is to write and publish content even when it feels like no one is listening. It’s also a great illustration of the power of re-purposing content. In this particular case, I used the workshop as the basis for multiple blog posts and SlideShare presentations in addition to promoting the video.

It makes me stop and wonder how many more leads might have been generated if I had kept on top of my editorial calendar, content distribution, and social networking. It’s been a valuable lesson and now it’s time to get back to practicing what I teach. 🙂

I also wanted to share a timely hangout with Mark Vang and Ryan Hanley, the topic was content marketing and Ryan shared his experience and expertise in the area of creating and publishing content in a variety of formats, including a very successful podcast, The Content Warefare Podcast which is focused on providing tips for content marketing and social media.

Check out the video and learn some great tips content marketing.
